“Festively Fall” describes this painting of the Linn Cove Viaduct along the Blue Ridge Parkway. Here, reds and oranges accented with small pops of green dominate the right side of the canvas. The colors perfectly describe the fall foliage of the October parkway. The abstract shapes used to render the leaves and trees mimic the variety of fall’s forms—from the hardwood leaves to the sharply defined a-frame of the squatting conifer. Running through the rich colors of the fall foliage is the Linn Cove Viaduct, painted in shades of light grey. It twists through the scenery before curving and disappearing, as if swallowed by the trees. Above the landscape the blue sky hangs limitless and radiant, spotted with bright white clouds—represented here with geometric shapes and loosely applied brushstrokes. The scene is from something out of a picturesque travel magazine, but even more alive and vibrant. The painting creates a yearning to be on the parkway at the peak of fall’s drama.
