One of the most beloved animals in Appalachia, the fox is elusive, cunning, wise, dignified, and noble. This painting brilliantly captures the qualities of the fox. Here, the fox sits upright gazing toward the viewer, or even slightly to the upper right of the viewer, as if she is gazing past the viewer and can see something that the viewer cannot. Her fluffy orange fur is painted in shades of yellow, peach, white and brown, and bright red lines separate the tufted white hair on her chest from her orange coat. The background is painted in cool blues, some with hints of teal green. White brushstrokes are dabbed onto the canvas amidst the blues, and the appearance is of that of a snowy landscape. The fox is an orange flame against a winter wonderland.
