In this painting, a snowy foreground meets the reds of winter flora. Above that, the dark forest stands before the towering mountains. High above that, the red and yellow sky before dusk offers a brief reprieve from snow showers. This is the time of day when locals who have hunkered down through the snowstorm venture out into the snowy landscape to appreciate the beauty of the snow-covered log fence as the light from above casts purple shadows in the snow. The bright white snow makes the red and orange of the winter flora look like cherries on vanilla ice cream. These are the times when the world is quiet and the beauty and wonder of the Blue Ridge is all-encompassing.

The title of this winter landscape mountains painting art is Heart of the Blue Ridge.

Thank you Elizabeth! I painted those thick textures using a large palette knife. Beforehand I stuck my face in the cold creek water to help inspire me to paint this scene of the Appalachian mountains.

It reminds me of a cold late fall day with an early snow. I can feel the chill in the air, the crispness, I can smell smoke from a nearby cozy cabin and heat the sound of a whippoorwill calling.
